Blue Ensō – Presence, Imperfection and Encounter

A New Artwork for the Exhibition “Paths of Encounter” in Berlin

With “Midnight Blue”, I present a work that explores the themes of Ensō, connection and cultural encounter.

The Ensō circle is one of the most iconic symbols of Japanese Zen tradition. Drawn in a single concentrated gesture, it represents wholeness, emptiness, infinity and the present moment. At the same time, it reminds us that true beauty is not found in perfection, but in authenticity and vitality.

In this artwork, I reinterpret this symbol through a contemporary artistic language.

The piece was created on handmade paper embedded with natural plant fibres. These organic elements create a unique surface texture and remind us that all living things are part of a larger whole. The visible fibres symbolize growth, transformation and impermanence.

The vibrant blue introduces another layer of meaning. Blue evokes water and sky, depth and openness. It embodies both movement and stillness, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect.

The circle itself remains intentionally imperfect. Its traces reveal the process of creation and remind us that perfection is not the goal. It is precisely these irregularities that give the work its vitality and individuality.

For me, this artwork also speaks of encounter. Different cultural influences—calligraphy, abstract painting and natural materials—enter into dialogue with one another. Together they create a space where boundaries become permeable and new perspectives can emerge.

“Paths of Encounter – A Cross-cultural Exhibition of Ink and Painting from Berlin and Ankara”

The exhibition brings together artists from Berlin and Ankara and highlights cultural exchange between Korea, Germany and Türkiye.
